City Changes the Standards of Poor Determination

Jakarta Provincial Government will change the standards to determine poor residents in the capital city. The changes, which at first referred to daily calories consumed by the residents, such as United Nations (PBB) standards, will be changed to Adequate Living Standards (KHL).

If using the data from BPS (Central Statistics Agency), the poverty is low. Why? Because BPS only uses calorie standards

If using the data from BPS (Central Statistics Agency), the poverty is low. Why? Because BPS only uses calorie standards. Imagine your income is Rp 344 thousand, and you are categorized not poor. In my opinion, people with income below Rp 2 million in Jakarta are categorized as poor,” uttered Vice Jakarta Governor Basuki T Purnama (Ahok) at City Hall, Wednesday (4/30).

According to Basuki, the changes of poor standards in the city will have effect to the assessment of Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi)’s leadership.

“We do not care anymore if people said Jakarta is poorer when Jokowi-Ahok leads, because we improve the standards. I don’t care,” he stated.

Moreover, Basuki asked BPS and Jakarta Development Planning Agency (BPPD) to start implementing KHL standards when conducting survey. Thus, the changes will make poverty in Jakarta boost to 60 percent.

“I will run contra flow, it is better to follow KHL standards. We do not care if people said our regime makes Jakarta poorer. It (number of the poor in Jakarta) indeed will increase because we are raising the standards,” he asserted.
